Town of Carolina Beach is Hiring a General Maintenance Worker III Near NC, NC

An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks requiring the use of hand tools, power tools and light equipment operation. Work involves the construction, maintenance, repairs and cleaning of the Boardwalk, Marina, and other municipal property. Work ranges from skilled carpentry and plumbing, cleaning facilities, painting, repair or replacement of boardwalks and surrounding area property. This position has high interface and visibility with public and contractors. This position works weekends and some evenings as part of normal shift in routine and non-routine work-based requirements of the day and work is performed with a considerable degree of autonomy and with limited on-site supervision and may serve as a crew leader of other employees, if assigned. May also include working with other laboring crews for the Town on assignments such street sign maintenance, minor facility and equipment repair, cutting down trees, clearing snow and ice, storm preparation and recovery, and other duties. Work is supervised by the Public Works Supervisor and is evaluated for efficiency, quality, feedback and observation of work completion according to department and community standards.
 
  • Acts as lead team member in projects involving technical and skilled work.
  • Repairs or replaces fixtures such as hinges, sinks, drains, toilets, tiles, beach showers heads, plumbing, control valves, and other fixtures
  • Repairs wooden beach accesses and other structures; measures and cuts materials; keeps screws and nails from protruding to ensure safety
  • Drives pick-up truck and operates hand and power tools such as power saws, drills, back pack blower, chain saws, power washers, tree trimmers, and other equipment; may occasionally operate other equipment such as a back hoe, trencher, or post hole digger
  • Picks up and disposes trash and refuse such as clothing, shoes, bottles, cans, tents, dead animals, cigarette butts, paper, and other trash to ensure appearance all areas of the Town boardwalk provide a quality experience for visitors
  • Empties trash containers, separates recycle from regular trash and cleans trash containers
  • Cleans public buildings; vacuums, sweeps, mops floors, dusts, empties trash, cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies required for public use; cleans beach showers.
  • Prepares area for special events by setting up and taking down tables, chairs, banners, or other special decorations and lighting
  • Performs cold patch on asphalt and may assist with patching and repairing concrete structures such as sidewalks
  • Performs routine troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Communicates with business owners and public to identify and resolve issues; reports issues to supervisory personnel; exercises good judgment to prioritize tasks to ensure quality and safety of work
  • Works along an assigned route picking up garbage, yard waste, and loose junk goods; loads waste into truck; transports to appropriate disposal site
  • Directs traffic while crew member backs up trucks; assisting in backing up the truck once reaching the landfill or disposal site
  • Cleans public buildings; vacuums, sweeps, mops floors, dusts, empties trash, cleans restrooms and supplies paper and related products; cleans windows and mirrors
  • Operates chain saws, weed eaters and other light equipment to cut, prune and trim shrubbery and trees; rakes leaves, and removes fallen limbs and trash; plants, fertilizes, irrigates and maintains plants and shrubbery
  • Erects, repairs and maintains street and informational signs for the Town
  • Erects fencing and signage at campsites on designated section of beach strand
  • Demonstrates a positive customer focused behavior when interacting with citizens and guests
  • Keeps routine activity and incident reports
  • Performs related work as required
  • Working knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class
  • Proficient in the use of common power tools and hand tools
  • Ability to comprehend and apply data from building codes, repair manuals, and data sheets
  • Ability to prioritize work and work effectively in an autonomous environment
  • Employee must be conscious of safety methods and best practices in order to avoid injury to others and self
  • General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used for carpentry, plumbing, grounds and building maintenance.
  • General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment
  • Ability to perform duties highly visible to the public and under adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instruction
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public and demonstrate courtesy
  • Ability to provide guidance and oversee the work of other employees if required
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and machinery, including vehicles and power tools
  • Ability to cooperate and work well as a team member in carrying out work assignments
  • Ability to walk, stand, and perform strenuous physical work for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work varied hours to accomplish objectives and be subject to call in on weekends and holidays for overtime
Physical Requirements
Physical requirements are defined as Heavy work. This class must be able to perform work exertion up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee must be able to perform the basic physical life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Employee must have the visual acuity to operate equipment and tools; to perform trades task, use measurement instruments, read instructions, to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work performed or needs to be performed as well as recognize and apply safety standards of work performed. Employee must have the ability to speak and communicate with others as well as hear spoken words for instructions or answer questions. Employee must have the stamina and strength to perform duties of the classification or other work as assigned for extended periods of time
 
Working Conditions
Employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme temperatures and conditions, as well as loud noise levels. Work occurs in all weather conditions and requires working Saturdays and Sundays as part of regularly scheduled work days; may also include working, evenings, holidays and working overtime. Employees are subject to physical workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or vehicles, working on scaffolding and high places, potential exposure to chemicals as well as atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dusts, dirt, gases, atmospheric conditions, oils or poor ventilation. Employee may work in close quarters, crawl space, small enclosures, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. Work may subject employee to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Employees are to use and/or wear personal protective equipment as required. This position has been deemed Safety Sensitive.
 
 
 Education 
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency

Experience
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in related maintenance tasks

Special Requirements
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • Immunization against blood borne pathogens is indicated for this position
  • Employee required to successfully complete the NIMS course work applicable to the position within one year
